Five months after we left them in Rolling Thunder, Steel Tiger brings back USAF Major Court Bannister, Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel Wolf Lochert, and USAF First Lieutenant Toby Parker, now scattered to their new posts Bannister in Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California, Wolf Lochert at Lang Tri, Republic of Vietnam, carrying out covert operations in Laos, and Toby Parker, in the pilot training program at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. Soon their diverse paths will lead all three men back to Vietnam for a second tour of duty -- in the very heart of the conflict.

Having given up his astronaut's slot stateside, Court Bannister teams up with Major "Flak" Apple fighting enemy aircraft in the skies and politics on the ground. Wolf Lochert, thrown into the infamous Long Binh Jail for murder, makes a contract who puts him on the trail of a weapons smuggling ring and leads him to a figure high in the American chain of command. Toby Parker, still reeling from the trauma of his first tour of duty, pulls himself into shape, only to meet a danger for which he cannot prepare. And, Berent introduces a memorable new character, Vladimir Chernov, a Soviet fighter pilot in Hanoi, who may or may not be the real enemy. Here, Berent provides keen insight into the Hanoi air defense system that blasted over 1300 U.S. Airplanes out of the air.

As a harassed Lyndon Johnson fires his Secretary of Defense, the Chiefs of Staff stop just short of mass resignation, and General Whitey Whisenand once again goes to Vietnam to dig out the truth.

It is the second of the five-book Rolling Thunder series. Next are Phantom Leader, Eagle Station, and Storm Flight
"Berent maintains the high quality of the series with sharp detail and fast action," says Kirkus Reviews. Drawn from the experiences and imagination of one who was there, Steel Tiger captures the intensity of the most controversial war in modern history.

"A taut, exciting tale of good men in a bad war. Berent is the real thing." --- Tom Clancy

" A decorated Vietnam pilot, Mark Berent knows planes and men and battle, and he whirls them around in a story of uncommon strength." W.E.B Griffin

STEEL TIGER An Historical Novel of War and Politics Wings of War Book 2 edition by MARK BERENT Literature Fiction eBooks

Steel Tiger is a great follow up to Phantom Leader. Berent goes above and beyond again to depict the fighter pilot and gives well deserved praise to the brave men who functioned as FAC's (Forward Air Controllers). The fighter pilots had a tough, dangerous and gut wrenching job. But, the FAC had to pick out the targets, direct the attacks while initially flying low and slow in a small single engine propeller driven aircraft (later upgraded to a twin engine aircraft and eventually a jet fighter).

Nerves of steel, an over abundance of intestinal fortitude and a lot of love for the Ground Pounders as well as their fellow pilots, were attributes of an FAC. The men flying the fighters and an FAC mission are not your average guy. The antics that these guys pulled defy reality sometimes, but it was their way of surviving.

Don't miss the opportunity to read any of Berent's books. He will open up a whole new world to any citizen who has never been in the thick of battle. To say I would recommend Steel Tiger would be an understatement.

STEEL TIGER An Historical Novel of War and Politics Wings of War Book 2 edition by MARK BERENT Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

There are too many sub stories. I thought this was about a pilot but I ended up reading about a couple of pilots, a Green Beret sergeant, a Cuban, a Russian officer and I forget who else. Also seemed to be some gratuitous moments--one about a young Viet Nam boy who was chained over an ant hill with an old rifle and told he had to shoot at Americans. Another about the torture of an American airman. It seems the author just likes to write stuff.
Jet jocks will get off on the detailed descriptions of aerial dogfighting in this tale. For me it got a little wonky and i found myself clicking past them.

All in all this is a solid Viet Nam war-era tale, told by a guy who lived it. Solid characters fit into a well developed story line that has as its back drop the historical context of the war. Berent also elequently captures the feel of the times, and this is one of the things i enjoy most about his books.

The story continues that saga of two characeters introducued in the first book, Court Bannister, and Toby Parker as they continue training to return to the war. Bannister in F-4's and Parker in spotter planes.

If you remember, or are interested in getting a feel for the sense of purpose that faded into a national malaise as a result of the news coverage and the body bags filling up, then this book, and the entire series will serve as a solid primer.

An excellent read, my first comment not withstanding.
Make sure your is at 100 percent when you sit down with this novel, because you won't want to stop reading to let it recharge! Excellent character development, conflict and dialog. The combat scenes are detailed, realistic, and incredibly-well choreographed. Berent really puts you into the cockpit during bombing missions, dogfights, and SARs. In this novel, you reconnect with Court Bannister, Toby Parker, and Wolf Lochert, the good guys you met in Book One of the Wings of War series. And Buey Dan is still around, too. You'll find yourself hyperventilating as you dodge SAMs, triple-A and Atolls along with Court Bannister. And you'll learn more about Toby Parker, the reluctant hero you met in the first book in this series. This book is so real I feel like I'm back at Ubon, flying over Pack 6. This book is the real deal - Sierra Hotel!
"Steel Tiger" is the second book in a series of five books called "The Wings of War".
After reading the first book, in this series, "Rolling Thunder", I, immediately, bought the entire series! Can't go wrong - five books for $15.00. Each book leads into the next with colorful characters. Some, stay - some leave. The four main characters are, always, there. Berent has the great ability to entwine pilots, airmen, grunts, Special Forces and politicians into great read. Although, this book is written as a novel, it is history. It will make you angry. It tells, the real story, of how completely clueless politicians (Johnson, McNamara and boot licking cronies) tried to run a war from the marble pillars of the White House to a country 9000 miles away. I have, literally, read hundreds of books on Vietnam - This series is the best and most entertaining I have ever read. Page turning and impossible to put down. I bought the first book to read between a Grisham or a Conley book. I seldom read the same type of book back to back. Not this time! I can not begin to read the third book "Phantom Leader". As good as these books are, I will read the entire series before starting something with a different subject matter. You can not miss with this series. Take my advice - BUY THEM ALL "Rolling Thunder", "Steel Tiger", "Phantom Leader", "Eagle Station" and "Storm Flight". One of the great things about this author is that he is a True American Hero Serving three tours in Vietnam, he flew everything from props to Phantoms. His decorations, medals and awards show one, outstanding Patriot and Warrior. He was there and has put it on paper.
This is book two of a five-book series by Mark Berent on the U. S. air war in Viet Nam. I have finished books 1, 2 & 3 and am reading 4 now. So far, I have found them to be very well-written, interesting and often exciting. As a fighter pilot himself, Berent vividly describes aspects of aerial combat that are exciting and suspenseful. He also does a great job of showing why we lost the war through the political ineptness and meddling by LBJ and his minions.
