She is a very talented author!

It's very sad to see some people can't distinguish the difference between a NOVEL and a NOVELLA. The author clearly stated it's a novella, so I don't understand why a handful of people complain it's too short.

Okay, to my review.

I started reading this on my app, but my eyesight fluctuates and it's a bit hard to read sometimes, so I bought the Audible version (and the person who recorded it did a fantastic job to capture the thriller element!).

I agree with some people that the time shifts are a bit distracting and lessens the pace of the story, it's interesting how the story plays a game of "catch up" with itself. I always found myself wondering "When did this happen? How did Lucy get there?"

Even though Lucy is already established as a character through previous books in this series-- which I haven't read yet, it's completely fine to start with this novella. You can understand Lucy's mindset through the flashbacks and her present circumstances (in which, by today's standards of thriller stories isn't all that innovative, to be honest.)

However, for what the story lacks in character development and creativity, it's definitely an enjoyable read from start to finish.

My only complain is that the identity of the main antagonist wasn't revealed at the end and the person Lucy was struggling with in the beginning was obviously not him.

Like I said, for what it lacks in creativity, it's still a good read/listen.

I'll be checking out more of CJ Lyon's works in the near future.
I usually love this author, however she strayed a little too far into the macabre realm for my comfort zone this time. I usually don't buy the novellas either because you finish them in about thirty minutes. So I usually don't even look at them. Since this was C.J.- and a Lucy, I figured I had better check it out. It is kind of misleading- this is a very important and key part of the saga and if you don't read it and just go to the next one due out in Sept. "Hard Fall"- you will be sorely lacking in what led up to, I imagine the story line of the new book. I'm just a little dissappointed in the clumsy way these two have come about and I'm not even sure I want to read the new one when it does come out. I really liked this author until now, I have thirteen of her other books- that is a LOT for me because I'm disabled and on a tight budget. This is one of my favorite kinds of entertainment- my reading, this one just kind of left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak.
After Shock is a short novella, about a 100 pages, by C J Lyons and a excellent writer of all his books.
The novella is essentially a prologue to the follow on novel Hard Fall and both are excellent and can be read independently,
but I would suggest you read After Shock first. AFTER SHOCK is so good it may be even slightly better than HARD FALL.
I would recommend any and all books by C J Lyons.

After Shock is very fast paced and a gripping short story that keeps you breathless all the way to the end. The story line is great but the scenes and characters are so descriptive and real that you feel you are really there in the action. The only negative comment I can make is that some of the chapters are flashback background chapters to add more detail to previous chapters which to me was a little disruptive.
I just loved this book and do not miss this one.

It’s not your typical Lucy Guardino novel, but the story is still full of suspense and excitement;
This little novella was a very quick read. I must admit to not having read anything else previously in this series about FBi agent Lucy Guardino, but thought that since this is not one of the main novels in the series, it would probably be of less consequence if I did.
It turns out, that the consequences of what happened in this little volume could easily and very likely will carry over in all future volumes of this series. I guess bad luck for me when I decide to read more about Lucy.
The story is well-written with the story being tossed back and forth between something that happened earlier that day and what is happening now. Without saying too much, the story is pretty intense, gruesome and at times frustrating on account of what happens to Lucy, her family, her actions, her decision-making, her resourcefulness, her luck (and lack thereof) and the people she is up against.
I must admit that she annoyed me at times, but looking at the situations from her perspective I can understand where she is coming from, even I don't agree with all of it.
Will I read more volumes in this series? Yes, definitely - I have already acquired another volume, so let's see. It probably won't be long before I get to it.
