The Sovereignty of God Arthur W Pink 9780801070884 Books

Wonderful book for John Calvin followers because it reinforces the absolute truth that God is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. The highly controversial question in Christianity is the polarised view of whether God is in control of all things, laws of nature, disasters, happiness, human sufferings, that one is born ugly or beautiful, intelligent or with down syndrome? Or has God ceased control after creating the world in 6 days, after which God stood idly on the sideline while the snake tempted Eve bringing the pivotal downfall of man. Did God unleash the universe to its own random volition and allowed evil and good run amok unsupervised? Does man have free will or that they think they have free will but not because God is always behind his free will pulling the puppet strings thus controlling the choices that Man can make? Does God choose only some to be his sheep while damning others to hell even before they were born? Should man judge God by man's values and sense of fairness? Is it acceptable that God does anything to pleasure himself?

This book discusses these important issues for those wrestling with the vagaries of life. Things are not random. Our fates have long been sealed even before we arrived on earth.

Our desire for God and our common sense are gifts from God. We can go through life with peace in our heart by knowing that the good and bad come from God. Our duty is be generous, loving and forgiving always.

The Sovereignty of God Arthur W Pink 9780801070884 Books Reviews

This book by A.W. Pink was recommended to me years ago. I finally read it. I find the early parts of it, easy to read. I find the latter parts of it, more difficult to read. Pink does well when he points to Bible references. And that is the best value of this book. His references to predestination and election are particularly enlightening. But...I do have reservations and quite honestly, it's hard to put my finger on them to describe why. But something about his chapter on prayer gave me pause. When I do have reservations about any teaching, or book, or preacher...I go to the words of Jesus in the Bible. I find those words to be the greatest exposition of truth, more than any book or preacher.
God is the creator of all things visible and invisible. He is omniscient and omnipotent, and He is over all things. He is The Sovereign King over all. A.W. Pink, point-by-point, shows that God is greater than our hearts and minds can imagine. God is not small and He doesn't fit into our finite thoughts, nor does He bow to the whims and idolatries of any society. He is not "reduced to the level of the creature"; God is greater than all. To quote Pink, "One of the most flagrant sins of our age is that of irreverence - the failure to ascribe the glory which is due the august majesty of God. Men limit the power and activities of the Lord in their degrading concepts of His being and character." Yet God isn't limited simply because many have chosen an idol (a god to suit themselves). For if God isn't sovereign over everything, then He isn't God. But He is God, and He is sovereign! Many insist that God is limited by man's so-called 'free will'. Pink, after noting the 'free will' of the men of Babel, of Pharoah, Balaam, Saul, Jonah, Nebuchadnezzar, and Herod, then states, "Yes, my reader, and you, too, had a will when you first formed your plans without first seeking counsel of the Lord, therefore did He overturn them! 'There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand' (prov 1921)" While focusing primarily on God's sovereignty (after all, it is the subject of this book), Pink doesn't negate spelling out each man's own responsibility. This book is definitely 5+ stars. I've already recommended it to friends. Those who took the time to read it praised it highly and have, in turn, recommended it to others. Get the unabridged version. The reader will have to pause often to consider the awesomeness of the God who calls each star by name and knows the number of hairs on our heads. Hopefully, the reader will be able to say, as did Paul, "Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgements and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the LORD, or who became His counselor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen." (Rom 1133-36)
A classic commentary of the Sovereignty of God. Without a through understanding of the Sovereignty of God His most significant attribute concerning us...GRACE... can not be fully comprehended. Pink only expounds on Scripture to fully explain Sovereignty. He doesn't add to it's meaning nor take from it. He explains Scripture regarding Sovereignty clearly and magnificently. Over the years I have given this book to a number of people and they all told me how it assisted them and woke them up to the reality of who God is and who we are not. We don't realize it when we do it, but we frequently cast God to be a bigger better us. Nothing can be further from the truth because that casting is limited by our concept of who we are and God is nothing like us.Absolute Perfection, pure Holiness, infinite Righteousness, Omniscience, Omnipotence, unendingly Merciful, purposefully Gracious are all characteristics that function under the nature of God's Sovereignty in a way that we can only scratch the surface of in understanding. Pink's book wonderfully explains the way we should view God and what He has done for us through His mercy and His Grace. I recommend this fine book to everyone who is willing to search the Scriptures along with Pink and let God speak to their heart. Aside from the Bible, this book is one of the most helpful ever written. When we comprehend God's Sovereignty over everything, we begin to understand the vast significance of His nature as compared to our sinful inability. This book is a gigantic help in that direction. Read it and give it to others. It may be one of the best things you could ever do for them. May God richly bless you through the insight and understanding that this book offers.
